The United Methodist Church
The people of The United Methodist Church (UMC) are a worldwide connection of more than 12 million members in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. The UMC was formed when the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in 1968. But we trace our heritage back to the movement begun in 1729 in England by John and Charles Wesley. Distinctive characteristics of The United Methodist Church are: Global, Connectional, Inclusive, Grounded in Scripture, Wesleyan, Concerned for Social Justice, Mission-oriented, and Ecumenical. Our motto is: Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors. Visit UMC.org for more information about The United Methodist Church.
