Portland, like many communities, is concerned about food insecure children. At PUMC, we are pleased to be able to assist our local non-profit organization, Portland Backpacks for Bellies (PBB), by providing a place for this group to store their donated items, organize these items, and prepare backpacks for distribution. This program is designed to help our local children with food insecurity during the weekend when school is not in session to address their hunger.
The founders, Michelle VanSlambrouck, Carri Thayer, and Holly Blastic, are working hard to fill this worthwhile need. Donations and volunteer help are always welcome. Area residents who would like to help, may contact them directly through email PortlandBackpacksforBellies@gmail.com or checkout their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/portlandbackpacksforbellies/
Please know the backpacks:
• Are given to participating students each Friday in their schools.
• Are filled with ready-to-eat, or easy to prepare, foods such as granola bars, oatmeal, shelf-stable milk, fruit, and crackers.
• Are distributed to students in a discreet, and caring manner. Students’ names will be kept confidential by the school and not shared with the Portland Backpacks for Bellies program.
